Fundraising Initiatives
The Taylor Statten Camping Bursary Fund was named to honor Taylor Statten I, a pioneer of overnight camping in Canada. We believe that summer camp can be a formative experience in a child’s life. But for that experience to truly resonate, the camp must be well suited to the child we are sponsoring. To that end, we work with a number of different camps.
In 2017, we sent 76 kids to 8 different camps in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. With the ever-increasing number of applications we have been receiving -- we doubled our historical averages in terms of funding campers and dollars spent starting in 2015 -- we are slowly growing the number of camps we are sending campers to while strengthening relationships with our long standing partners. You can find links to all of our partner camps below.
Additionally, we have made a contribution to Glen Bernard’s Syrian Camper program. In 2016, GBC welcomed 24 Syrian children to camp and this year they have expanded their program to 44 campers. We are pleased to be contributing to this initiative for the second year.
Each year we have several fundraising initiatives that our board works diligently on to help raise funds to send more kids to camp.
- Alumni Hockey Tournament Every May we host a tournament featuring players from TSC (Ahmek and Wapomeo) and the past two years a team from Wanipitei. Following the Hockey Tournament, we host our AGM followed by a dinner and informal camp reunion. The Hockey Tournament raises over $10k each year.
- September Camp Auction. Every Labour Day Weekend, we hold a live and silent auction at the Ahmek Dining Hall featuring a wide range of items - from handmade paddles to theatrical and sporting event tickets, to photography and paintings. The Auction is our largest annual event and last year raised $39,000, our highest total ever.
- Art Show. Every November we host an Art Show in downtown Toronto featuring 35 Canadian artists who have shown their works across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. This year’s show, Far And Wide, will showcase work that has been inspired by the beauty of Canada both outside of the city and within. Tickets are $75, (includes entry to the event, open bar and food) and can be purchased at TSCBF.com with all proceeds sending kids to camp! In 2016, the Art Show raised over $26,000 for the Bursary.
- November Family Skate. This year, we are hosting our first annual family skate. Camp has been such an integral part of our lives and we never see enough of our camp friends so we thought one more reason to get together was a great idea. The event will take place at the Mattamy Centre on Saturday, November 25th from 1:00-3:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there.
Additionally, we receive donations from many of you to further help fund summers for the many deserving children we work with.
