More about This Year's Art Show

10/11/2017

The Taylor Statten Camping Bursary Fund was established in 1972 by the staff and alumni of camps Ahmek and Wapomeo with the belief that summer camp can be a formative experience in a child’s life. It builds self-confidence, encourages teamwork, develops leadership, and fosters an appreciation of nature. The Bursary engenders these experiences for deserving campers by helping bridge the gap between camp fees and a family contribution. The average household income of our applicants is $38,000.

In our 40+ years of service, we have funded over 1300 camping summers and look forward to funding many more in the years to come. We work closely with our partner camps (currently 9 camps each summer) and through that collaboration have come to realize the importance of the camp experience to help foster young people that are more responsible, more caring, and more motivated.

Campers who:
·       Are responsible and accountable for their actions
·       Are respectful of themselves and the environment
·       Make meaningful contributions to their families and communities
·       Create healthy, positive relationships
·       Learn to persevere, are resilient, and are open to new challenges

For the past several years, due to a significant increase in camper applications, the Bursary has funded an average of 55 campers at a cost of $112,000; both double our historical averages. Not only is this a substantial investment on an annual basis, but we also commit to each camper for the duration of his or her camping career, which has a potential impact of up to five years per camper. Furthermore, this is a spending commitment we will continue to make into the foreseeable future.

The Bursary Fund is growing and not simply through supporting an increasing number of deserving campers. We are also enhancing our existing camping community by infusing it with deserving campers of varied backgrounds who bring their multiple experiences and interests with them. By providing summer experiences for a broader and more diverse group of campers, the Bursary is helping create the leaders of tomorrow and fostering stronger communities today.

Camp experiences build self-confidence and create a community of authentic relationships in an environment where campers can collaborate, learn, and mature by sharing their own unique experiences. This community should be accessible to as many children as possible – to discover, grow, and thrive – as every child has something to offer.

But every community needs a champion. A community that is able to change, adapt, and grow; where success is measured in the confidence that’s built, the lessons learned, and the friendships made. The Bursary creates and supports exactly this kind of environment – a community that can only be achieved when we invest in our community of campers.

YOU ARE INVITED!

To the 8th Annual TSCBF Art Show Fundraiser, November 2nd

The Taylor Statten Camping Bursary Fund is pleased to invite you to our 8th Annual Art Show and Sale "Far and Wide". The event is being held at the Storys Building in Toronto, on Thursday, November 2nd, and will feature 35 Canadian artists – from painters to sculptors to multimedia artists - with the work inspired by our great country, in this our 150th year.

Among the featured artists are Steve McDonald, David Marshak, and Elzbieta Krawecka – all widely shown across North America, Central America, Asia, and Europe.

Some of the individuals and institutions holding their
pieces are: The British Royal family, Royal St. George’s College, The Molson Family, ScotiaBank, The Weston Family, Gord Downie, The Government of Ontario Art Collection, the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Sarah Harmer, and BMO.

Last year’s show had over 300 attendees and raised $26,000.00 that sent 76 deserving children to summer camps across Canada! In 2017, the Fund helped finance memorable camper summers at a cost of $120k - both double our historical averages - at nine camps in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. Over our 40+ years of sending kids to
camp we are proud to have helped fund over 1,300 summer camp experiences and we are working hard to ensure there are another 1,300 to come.

Additionally for the 2nd year we are pleased to have made a contribution to Glen Bernard’s Syrian Camper program. In 2016, GBC welcomed 24 Syrian children to camp and this year they have expanded their program to 44 campers.

As the Art Show approaches, we will be sharing pieces of work that will appear in the show via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/tscbf/), Instagram (@tscbf), and www.tscbf.com, as well as posting a catalogue for Far and Wide.

Hope to see you there.

Regards,

7th Annual TSCBF Art Show - A huge Success

11/29/2016

Hello everyone,

On behalf of the Bursary Fund, I wanted to thank everyone for helping make this year's art show our most successful to date.

The show took place on Thursday, November 3rd at the Storys Building in Toronto where we had over 250 works of art on display, created by over 35 Canadian artists. The night was filed with friends, food, drink, and art sales that will fund the Bursary for the summer of 2017.

We were also fortunate enough to hear from a mother and son who have been supported by the Bursary Fund for the past several years. They spoke about how the Bursary Fund has enhanced their lives and how, in turn, they have improved the camping community by bringing their experiences and interests to camp, enriching the experience for their new-found camp friends.

The Bursary Fund is growing and not just through supporting an increasing number of deserving campers. We are realizing the true impact that we are having; not only for the campers we sponsor, but on the broader camping community by diversifying the overall camping experience.

In addition to building stronger communities, the Bursary is helping build leaders of tomorrow. The life-changing power of summer camp develops self-confidence in our campers. It creates people who will give back to their communities. And we need to provide opportunities for these children to grow and prosper. For the world to become a better place, we need to embrace each other, regardless of our backgrounds. Adding Bursary kids to camp life does that.

Thank you to our sponsors: The TD Bank, The Taylor Statten Camps, Wanipitei, Camp Ouareau, Summerhill Optometry, KJ Harrison, and Brantford Industrial. And to supporters of the Bursary Fund, The Burry Family, Wise Advisory and Fidelity Investments.

At the end of the night, we raised just over $26,000 to send deserving children to summer camps across the country in 2017. Our goal is to match, or better yet, surpass the 55 campers and $110,000 from this past summer. Both of these numbers are double our historical averages.

Attached you will find the pdf of the work from the Art Show. Many works are still for sale, with proceeds going to Bursary. A perfect holiday gift.

2016 September Camp Auction

Every summer, on the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend, the Bursary Fund Auction is held at Camp Ahmek on Canoe Lake. Beginning at 3:30 p.m. on the main beach in front of the Ahmek Dining Hall, a wide array of fun and exciting items are auctioned, with all the proceeds going towards the Bursary Fund.

Highly sought-after prizes fought over by the crowd have included everything from a weekend retreat in Vermont to a pair of bookshelves constructed from the hull of a canoe. Thank you once again to all who have donated or secured items for the auction – keep up the great work, items are always welcome.

A special thanks to the Taylor Statten Camps for hosting this annual event in support of the bursary.

The TSCBG (Taylor Statten Bursary Fund) provides financial assistance that can be put towards any camp that is an accredited member of the Ontario Camping Association or the Canadian Camping Association and is willing to contribute to the Fund by offering a satisfactory fee reduction. In addition to demonstrated financial need, the Fund seeks potential campers who are at least 11 years old and have shown leadership qualities. Once accepted for sponsorship, the Fund will provide annual financial assistance to the camper for as many years as required.

Ahmek September Camp Bursary Auction

9/8/2015

The Saturday of the Labour Day weekend was a gorgeous, sunny day in Algonquin park and the setting for the best Bursary Fund Auction ever! The event was well attended by many past donors and lots of new faces. There was a wide range of items from a Dr. Tay paddle, to photographs and paintings, to tickets to nostalgic camp clothing and more. While no one item stole the show, each item contributed to a great outcome.

An anonymous donation of $5,000 started the event off. This donor is so impressed that 57 bursary children were sent to camp this summer 2015, that they wanted to step up their support.
More than $34,000 was raised at the auction. All of this money will be used to send kids to summer camps in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta in the summer of 2016.

Thanks to all those who helped with the event, donated, bid, and purchased items!
